Posting some good news from Jaclyn Medincov...

I have exciting news to share with you! My artwork has just been released on the website www.20x200.com.

They have chosen two of my paintings on paper to reproduce into archival prints of various sizes. This is a great way to get some inexpensive art for yourself or a gift to your loved ones, co-workers, strangers... whomever you feel like giving to! Even if you never thought of having art in your home this is a great way to try it out. Also if you have a second and want to learn about other artists it is easy to sign up and receive weekly newsletters from 20x200. Please spread the word!

I have more good news! I am in the current #80 edition of New American Paintings magazine. You can find it at your local Barnes and Noble or order it from www.newamericanpaintings.com. They feature 40 emerging artists in each book. If it is not out yet it should be shortly so please keep checking.

Making a thing every day for a whole month!

I have again signed up for the Thing-a-Day project. As usual I am anxious about the idea of making something every single day for a whole month. But excited because previous years have been quite productive. In 2007 I completed the 28 Days project and last year I collaborated with Klaus Fruchtnis - a collaboration that still continues as our Cross Urban project.

As most artists, I have many unfinished projects, and many ideas I want to start but just haven't found the time. So, stay tuned - if everything goes well, February 2009 will be a productive month (keeping my fingers crossed on that promise.)

(Oh, and if this sounds at all of interest to your procrastinating, unmotivated yet creative side, join me over at Thing-a-Day!)

Madarts will be participating in the “smART” BROOKLYN GALLERY HOP gallery tour. We'll have a group show up in the gallery featuring all Madarts artists as well as having open studios for people to see more. Sunday, December 14, from 1pm to 6pm, come by on foot or ride the bus described below.

Sunday, December 14, from 1pm to 6pm, 64 participating Brooklyn art galleries will offer exhibitions and refreshments, as well as a chance for visitors to learn more about Brooklyn’s expanding art scene. The free smART Brooklyn Gallery Hop features buses that run through four different gallery districts, allowing participants to hop on and off the bus within each line’s loop. Buses will be staffed with art docents offering smART tip sheets about collecting and buying art.

BP Markowitz says, “With all the artists living and working here, I like to say Brooklyn is the “Creative Capital of New York City.” In addition to our wonderful museums, we’ve got scores of hip galleries—many showcasing the work of emerging Brooklyn artists. So I invite all art lovers of every stripe to get out and enjoy Brooklyn’s vibrant, lively art scene. There’s no better way to do it than the smART Brooklyn Gallery Hop. Just hop on a shuttle, browse, socialize, raise your ‘Art I.Q.,’ and maybe even purchase a work by the next Jeff Koons or Jean-Michel Basquiat—just in time for holiday gift giving!”

Four smART Brooklyn Gallery “districts” will be included in bus routes. Participants can visit galleries in the Gold Loop: DUMBO, Downtown Brooklyn, and Red Hook; the Red Loop: Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, and Bedford-Stuyvesant; the Green Loop: Crown Heights, Park Slope, Gowanus, Sunset Park, and Flatbush; and the Blue Loop: Bushwick, Greenpoint and Williamsburg.

Marcie Paper on 20x200

My basement neighbor Marcie Paper has as edition available at 20x200...

For those of you whom I haven't told, one of my paintings is being showcased at Jen Bekman's 20x200.

I hope I am not out-writing my welcome by sending you the link now that my 20x200 edition is up and running. I also hope that you check it out and share it with others!

At the risk of repeating myself, for those who aren't familiar with 20x200.

They have taken one of my paintings and made archival prints of it in three sizes, 200- 8 1/2"x 11" archival prints for only $20!, 20- 17"x22" for $200 and 2- 30"x40" for $2000.

Stephen Paul at Tabla Rasa

This Wednesday at 5:30 at Tabla Rasa Gallery, 48th street between 3rd and 2nd Avenues, the opening of NOBIS SOLO, a beautiful collection of work by 9 artists, including a pair of paintings from the 'Archaeology' series by Stephen Paul of Madarts.

Jacob Holdt "United States 1970-1975"

I found out about Jacob Holdt when I was browsing the second floor of the Strand bookstore looking for some economically priced photo books. I had never heard of Holdt before
and after flipping through a few pages I was blown away his pictures. It's like I had discovered some kind secret art nugget.

"In the early 1970s, when Jacob Holdt first arrived in the US with 40 dollars in his pocket, he planned to travel quickly across the country to South America. But, totally shocked and fascinated by what he discovered, he ended up staying five years. His family could scarcely believe the letters he sent them detailing the poverty he saw, so his father sent him a cheap amateur camera in order that Holdt could send home proof of his claims. Living as a vagabond, selling his blood twice a week, hitch-hiking over 100,000 miles, he depicted an incredible and unique portrait of America and its underclass."

But the story gets better...

After Holdt had completed the body of work and he showed it around Europe the Soviet government was interested publishing a book. Holdt agreed as he thought the book would raise awareness of impoverished people everywhere but then found out the KGB intended to use his work as anti American propaganda and had a lawyer successfully stop the Soviet distribution of the book. He has since worked for CARE as well as documenting white supremacist groups.

The thing about this book that is so great is it really shows how a well put together photo book can make a body of work. If you check out Holdt's website the images are still amazing but the book sequencing and selection of the photos in the book make the work so much more impressive. Make sure to check out the Steidl website as it has spreads from the book.

Artistic Collaborations

It's not every day that artists meet other artists who are interested in so many of the same things, and even have an appreciation for one another's aesthetic.

I have known Tokyo-based Colombian artist Klaus Fruchtnis for many years, but it is just recently that we discovered our similar interests in using photography as a way to capture urban spaces, in particular public ones. We also seem to always end up in language-based exercises.

We first collaborated on the Thing-a-Day blog run by some great people over at Eyebeam, and most recently decided to continue these ideas in a project we are calling Cross Urban.

I also recently met Brooklyn-based artist Annie Leist, (we were in a group show together at Broadway Gallery) and when I read her artist statement, I had to make sure I was not reading my own. I'm sure we'll find a way to work together as well - something I look forward to!

During the month of June 2008 I was one of two faculty, 14 students, and 1 project coordinator from The New School who lived and worked in the small lake-side village of San Lucas Tolimán, Guatemala, to collaborate with a group of Mayan artisan women, Ajkem’a Loy’a. Come check out this exhibition which displays documentation of that process that started in a Spring 2008 class on campus in New York City and culminated in Guatemala in late June.

Recent (old) Work

I actually dug these two images out of my vault recently. The one with the lens flares of the fire is probably going to go into the book I'm working on for my 'points of interest' series but the one of the doorway is a bit of an orphan right now, it may find it's way into the same body.
